Grace, Lady of Cassio by Rosemary Morris
It
has been a few years since I last read a romantic novel. When I picked up
Grace, Lady of Cassio, I rediscovered the delight of losing myself for a few
hours.
Both
Grace and her mother Countess Yvonne have been blessed – or cursed – with the
gift of second sight. Unbidden communications sometimes come to them as sudden
apparitions or premonitions of danger. How to respond to these messages, and at
the same time keep them secret, was only one of the conundrums facing Grace.
Grace
is beautiful, wilful and sixteen. As the teenage daughter of a noble family in
14th century England, marriage or the veil are the only paths open to her. Most
girls her age have already married and given birth. Her beloved twin brother
Fulk, Baron de Valcoln, is betrothed to a girl chosen for him by his parents.
Grace knows that her first obligation is to marry well and produce an heir. But
– who to marry? And how to protect her brother from the evil she senses near
him?
In
an era when murder often went undetected and rape unpunished, when only
strength and valour could protect the innocent from brutality and lawlessness,
anything might happen.
And in this story, it does! Unlike a fairy-tale that ends with marriage and
“happily ever after”, this romance has its stormy beginning in marriage. Only
then do the real troubles begin. Murder, rape, kidnapping, treachery, and
deceit stalk Grace and her husband through turreted castle and cobblestone
courtyard, across woodland paths and wooden drawbridges, in quiet chambers and
crowded streets.
If
you like a story that has all the elements of a Gothic romance, I highly
recommend Grace, Lady of Cassio.
Author’s note. Grace, Lady of Cassio does not
contain explicit sex.
